Plastic utensils that are used for disposable one-time use should be replaced by edible utensils, made of hard cracker materials, such as corn or wheat.
Crackers can be made hard enough to use for most picnic type foods such as salads and pasta and vegetables.
These utensils would be edible, so they wouldn't have to just be thrown out like the plastic knives forks and spoons that are used for picnics and conferences and other one time gatherings that usually use disposable utensils. Bowls and plates could also be made out of cracker materials, pressed materials made out of flour and grains.
This idea would prevent the large amounts of plastic that are routinely wasted from going into landfills, as they could be eaten as part of the meal. If a fork or spoon broke while using it, the person could eat it and get a new one to continue using to finish their meal.
When people and companies have meals like this, not only are the used plastic utensils and dishes thrown out, but very often whole piles of the unused plastic utensils and dishes also get thrown right into the trash, unused, perfectly clean and perfectly good. They could be saved for future use, but instead they go in the landfills.
With the edible utensils and dishes, they could if nothing else be placed outside for the birds and squirrels to eat rather than put in the trash, and at worst if they are thrown in the trash at least they would be biodegradable, unlike the plastic ones.
